Review The Secret Passage

Oh, "The Secret Passage"! Let me tell you, it's a bit of a mixed bag, but in a charmingly Victorian way. Think of it as a cozy mystery with a dash of perplexing complexity. I listened to most of it via text-to-speech, and I have to say, some parts really benefited from that—the descriptions of the atmospheric setting, for example, were wonderfully evocative. However, other sections felt… meandering. The author's style is quite dated, and the constant digressions, while possibly charming to a reader who can skip ahead or re-read, made the audio version a bit of a slog at times. It's one of those books I think I would have enjoyed more by reading it directly, if my eyes had allowed.

The plot, itself, is a classic whodunit. A reclusive old lady dies, and our hero—a rather dim but charming sportsman—and his detective friend are entangled in a web of secrets involving a counterfeiting ring, long-dead relatives, and multiple love triangles (yes, really!). There's a fascinating puzzle at the heart of it all, and it kept me engaged enough to want to know the solution. However, the path to that solution is a winding one! The sheer number of characters and the sometimes opaque nature of their relationships did leave me a little muddled at times. I never truly felt I fully understood the motivations of some of the players until everything was neatly tied up at the very end. It's a testament to Hume's skill that, despite this, the story still held my interest.

The characters themselves are a curious bunch. The two central lovers are, shall we say, very Victorian in their sensibilities—almost unbearably so at times. The detective, too, felt a little unprofessional, even for a man of that era. Yet, there's a certain charm to their eccentricities; they are products of their time, and that adds a layer of interest. Honestly, some of their motivations remain mysterious until the very end. But then again, that’s part of the fun of the game, isn't it?

One thing that struck me was the title itself. It's a bit of a giveaway, which I thought was a shame. The book hints at a hidden passage, and that does indeed play into the mystery; however, revealing such a core element upfront somewhat undermines the suspense. This is just one example of what some critics have pointed out as the book's occasional tendency to feel overly contrived or convoluted, its plot points occasionally seeming to be thrown together purely for narrative convenience.

Despite these flaws, "The Secret Passage" holds a certain undeniable charm. The Victorian setting is richly depicted, and the story, though rambling, keeps you moving forward. It's not a perfect mystery, but it is undeniably entertaining in a way that modern thrillers often aren't. If you enjoy a good, old-fashioned whodunit with a dash of convoluted plotting and some wonderfully eccentric characters, it's certainly worth a read – or a listen, though I’d advise reading it over the audio book if possible. It's a satisfying read, and I'm tempted to explore more of Fergus Hume's works now, seeing as he's the author of the best-selling detective novel of the 19th century!
